First day of school

We had a longer summer vacation than ever before, but it seemed to fly by. Mitch started 5th grade today. Emery's first official day isn't until September 3rd, but today she had to go in for her kindergarten testing.

Mitch was surprisingly patient and nice for pictures. Emery was so excited and he was excited for her.

He was really cute telling her where she will line up, play etc.

We met (cousins) Ben and Nick in front of the school.

Then Emery went in for her 45 minute test...

This is her teacher, Ms. Larsen.

Emery was so excited to greet Mitch when he came home. She thought he was running in for a hug, but he was just celebrating the fact that his teacher is not giving any homework for two weeks!

But she still got a hug.

I decided to make my kids write in a journal every day after school (so much for no homework) and this is what they had to say.......
Emery - "I went to school today. I had to take a test. It was awesome. My teacher is Ms. Larsen. She is cool."
Mitch -"Today I started fifth grade. I have the diggibomb teacher. Her name is Mrs. Bodtcher. She is the diggibomb teacher because she gives no homework for the first two weeks of school and she is super nice. I sit by Moises and Trevor. I am excited for this year because I had a mean, lousy, rude, bad and a terrible teacher last year."
(I had to stop him and give him a lecture about that ending.)

losing a tooth and being lazy

Mitchell didn't lose any teeth until first grade so I was really shocked when Emery told me she had a loose tooth. Apparently she had been eating pretzels and she bit into one that was really hard. It knocked her tooth loose. After wiggling it around for a few hours she pulled it out by herself. She was so excited and fascinated with it that she lost it before she got it under her pillow. I hope the tooth fairy will understand.

Just a funny story....
Emery loves to read books. She loves when I read books to her. We have a series of books about manners that she loves and usually picks atleast one in her stack of books to read every night.
The other night I was sitting on the couch and she came walking over and I asked her to go in the kitchen and get something for me. She said "NO". I was a little surprised and asked why.

She reminded me about the books we have been reading and pretty much quoted this page exactly......

I heard that there are many rewards when you start reading to your kids at a young age- not really the reward I was looking for!
